text_direction=”default”]From biblical school to home visits, Terry King’s life of service reflects a deep commitment to human dignity and the Gospel.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Terry King heard Cardinal Dolan tell a story on the radio about his father secretly delivering Christmas gifts to a family in need,\u00a0introducing himself as simply fulfilling an “order” so the father could keep his pride,\u00a0something stirred inside her. She had heard of the St. Vincent de Paul Society before, but that story grabbed her\u00a0and inspired her to found a St. Vincent de Paul\u00a0conference at her home parish at the time, St. John the Evangelist in Loveland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s just really fun to\u00a0be living\u00a0out your faith with other people who want to do it too,” she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That spirit has shaped\u00a0nearly every\u00a0chapter of King’s life of service. From launching a single parent ministry\u00a0to now working to\u00a0establish\u00a0a new\u00a0St. Vincent de Paul\u00a0conference at her\u00a0new\u00a0home parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Longmont, her work has consistently centered on meeting people where they are.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The spark was lit at biblical school\u00a0through St. John Vianney Seminary Lay Division. When her youngest daughter left for college, King seized the opportunity to enroll in classes at night while working full time during the day. What she found there set her faith ablaze.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Every time I went, I learned something\u00a0new,\u00a0and it just kept growing inside of me,” she recalled. “After a couple of\u00a0years,\u00a0I realized\u00a0I needed\u00a0to do something with this.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drawing on her own experience as a single mother, she launched a single parent ministry at St. John the Evangelist\u00a0expecting to reach young mothers in the thick of it. Instead, she was met by women closer to her own age, whose children were grown but whose need for community and belonging was just as real.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“They’re the ones that needed it,” King said. Several of those women\u00a0remain\u00a0among her closest friends today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With support from mentor parishes and\u00a0friends\u00a0in Denver, she built the\u00a0St. Vincent de Paul\u00a0conference\u00a0at St. John the Evangelist\u00a0from the ground\u00a0up and\u00a0served as its president for six years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of St. Vincent de Paul’s work are home visits \u2014 Vincentians sitting with neighbors in their own homes, listening to their stories, and offering help through a difficult stretch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our motto is to see the face of Christ in the people you serve, and be the face of Christ to them,” King said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even after moving to Firestone to be closer to family and look toward retirement, King continued making the drive north to Loveland each month to complete her home visits.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There’s never ever been a time that I regretted it. Every meeting is so incredible\u00a0with\u00a0these people. You can’t imagine what they’re going through,\u00a0and you just see such strength and resilience in them.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But even in the midst of all of her outreach work, King rarely ever feels burned out, something she credits to daily prayer.\u00a0She has a prayer room in her home and starts\u00a0every morning there.\u00a0She also credits her faith community \u2014 faithful friends, regular Mass at St. Francis, and twice-monthly St. Vincent de Paul meetings where members share, encourage one another, and stay grounded together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had a spiritual director tell me a long time ago that I needed community. At that point, I had none,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter getting involved in the single parent ministry, St. Vincent de Paul, and\u00a0St. Francis of Assisi\u2019s Welcome ministry, I have so much community! At St. John the Evangelist, I felt like I went from knowing\u00a0nobody knowing most of the parish in four years.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as she works toward establishing a new conference at St. Francis of Assisi, King hopes others will discover what she has: that St. Vincent de Paul offers something rare \u2014 a concrete, structured way to live out a faith that can otherwise feel hard to put into action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
