“This is why I’m here at Mines, I want to give back everything that has been given to me”

Third year Colorado School of Mines student, Michael Maggiore has the “heart of a servant,” and the “personality that attracts others to the faith,” according to multiple nominations Maggiore received to be Disciple of the Month.

The computer science major is the head sacristan for the Mines Catholic Campus Ministry Chapel and is recognized to be pivotal to the outreach of Catholics at Mines.

“Michael is the prayerful backbone of our sacramental life,” said full-time Mines chaplain Father Chris Considine.

Maggiore cleans and maintains the necessities of the chapel in addition to supporting other students to live out their faith through confessions, adorations, and campus events.

College is the turning point of many people’s lives when they decide to live out their faith or bury it, Maggiore said. He wants to help create a vibrant environment that will encourage others to remain and grow in their Catholic faith.

“It’s a joy to bring others to the faith, and at the end of my life, if I can say I saved only one life, it would all be worth it,” Maggiore said.

It was through the spiritual gift of charity from a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionary, that Maggiore was first welcomed to the Mines campus after a time in his life when he didn’t have any Catholic friends. In turn, he has offered that same friendship to others who may have lost hope.

Maggiore said, the Mines Catholic community has proven to be a fertile ground for students to grow deeper in their faith and transform lives. Mines also has served as a place that fosters priestly vocations like archdiocese seminarian Ryan Mack, who described his years at Mines as “deeply formative.”

“This is why I’m here at Mines, I want to give back everything that has been given to me,” Maggiore said.
