Each year, teams of third and fourth graders from across the archdiocese gather at host gyms for the Widget League basketball season. Before every game, players, coaches, and families unite in prayer, facing the crucifix. Throughout the season, the Holy Spirit works within the community, fostering connection and faith.

For over a decade, Roman and Valerie Fresquez have led the program at Notre Dame Parish School in Denver, dedicating countless hours to organizing and managing games. In recognition of their commitment, they’ve been named this month’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal Disciples of the Month. For the Fresquezes, the league is more than a sports program—it’s a community where faith and charity flourish.

Started in the 1980s, Widget League has since grown to include volleyball and flag football. Roman and Valerie have played pivotal roles in keeping the Christian spirit of the league alive. Their family, along with many volunteers, help manage hundreds of games annually. The couple ensures that sportsmanship and faith are central, even incorporating prayer during tense moments.

“Students feel at home here,” Valerie shared. “We care for them as we do our own kids.”

The Fresquezes’ dedication has touched countless lives, helping young players grow both on and off the court.
