Are you smarter than a Catholic Middle Schooler?
We challenge you to answer these questions about our Apostles. You may think you know, for instance, which apostle was a skeptic, and which was impulsive. But do you know which Apostle was the only one saved from martyrdom.
Something that often confuses even careful readers of the Bible is the use of two names for the same Apostle in some cases, said Joseph Todisco, Middle School theology teacher at Good Shepherd Catholic School.
“It was not uncommon in biblical times, as even today, to go by your middle name or two names,” Todisco said.
His middle schoolers find the little details he shares about the Apostles interesting, especially Judas. Did you know Judas sold out his friend Jesus for 30 pieces of silver which was the going rate for a slave at the time, Todisco asked?
The early teenage students also enjoy hearing about St. Peter the emotional hothead, since thy can relate to his impetuous nature.
“I try to explain that these seemingly mundane ordinary people who were fishermen, carpenters and a tax collector, not kings and queens, became the chosen Apostles. Just as you are not too unimportant to be disciples too,” Todisco said.
