Liz Gray, Katherine Abar, and Chrissy Arrieta, sisters and teachers at St. Thomas More School, are a testament to the impact of Catholic education. With a family history of educators, their commitment to faith-centered teaching is deeply rooted.

“There’s a lot of banter between us,” Gray shared, adding that their family dynamic carries over to the classroom. Abar agreed, saying it’s “very easy to be here and feel comfortable.”

The sisters have taught at the school for years, and their parents have been parishioners since 1995. “The parish and school are the vine and the branches of our family,” Abar said. Gray echoed, “I feel incredibly lucky to work where I’m a member and teach where my kids go to school.”

Arrieta initially taught preschool but was encouraged by Abar to join St. Thomas More. “Taking the position was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Arrieta said, reflecting on the ability to integrate faith daily with her students.

Teaching in a Catholic school allows the sisters to pray with students and model faith-based virtues. “This is what education should look like,” Arrieta said. Abar, who teaches Theology, added, “It’s important to arm [students] with prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.”

Gray appreciates the chance to “start every class with prayer,” and Abar aims to foster her students’ relationship with Jesus, knowing it’s “key to peace and happiness.”

Named this month’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal Disciples of the Month, the sisters exemplify the power of family and faith in education. Their dedication strengthens the community at St. Thomas More, reminding us of the profound impact of a supportive faith community.
