Spirit-Led Stewards: Transforming Lives at Colorado’s Camp St. Malo

“Our job really is to open the gate, and we show up and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.”

-Jim Richards

Nestled beneath Mount Meeker, Camp St. Malo welcomes visitors from around the world. At the heart of its mission are Jim and Sandy Richards, volunteer caretakers who demonstrate a powerful commitment to faith and service, guiding others toward moments of peace, healing, and grace.

The Richards arrived at Camp St. Malo “by the actions of the Holy Spirit.” They don’t consider themselves volunteers but Spirit-led stewards of this sacred place, facilitating divine encounters.

“We didn’t come there. We were invited to show up there. And by one blessing after another, we ended up being the full-time volunteer caretakers there,” Jim explained.

For Sandy, the camp offers a “beautiful, peaceful place to be,” drawing those seeking solace. Camp St. Malo’s Chapel on the Rock, set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Meeker, has become a place where visitors can “spend a few moments of peace.”

Their daily routine includes opening the gate, property maintenance, shoveling snow, cleaning facilities, maintaining trails, and working in the forest. With over 60,000 visitors each year, the couple also runs the gift shop, sharing the property’s rich history.

No task is too small, as each provides an opportunity to connect with others.

Jim and Sandy often witness transformative moments. Jim recalled a young couple who rushed into the chapel with a bouquet of flowers. Later, they shared their story. The woman, once severely ill and praying at the chapel years earlier, had been healed after a prayer before the Christ statue. She returned to offer flowers in gratitude.

The Richards’ service extends beyond individuals seeking peace. They’re deeply involved with Annunciation Heights, a neighboring ministry, bringing groups for outdoor activities. Sandy finds joy in seeing the energy youth bring to the camp. “It’s just really fun to have all the youth and kids around. People every day see their reactions and their comments and how their soul is just rejuvenated,” she said.

Their ministry goes beyond actions; it’s about being present in a place that inspires awe. “Our job really is to open the gate, and we show up and let the Holy Spirit do the rest,” Jim said.

In recognition of their humble service, Jim and Sandy have been named this month’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal Disciples of the Month. They welcome others into moments of grace, allowing God to work. In a world that rushes past, Camp St. Malo stands still, offering renewal to all who visit, thanks to two devoted disciples simply “opening the gate.”

Congratulations, Jim and Sandy, for being named the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal Disciples of the Month!
