As the season of Lent begins, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila will unveil a newly commissioned sacred icon, providing a focal point for prayer and reflection. The icon, titled “Mary at the Foot of the Cross,” was created by local artist Elizabeth Zelasko.

The new icon is designed to inspire contemplation on suffering, resilience, and the redemptive love of Christ. Its unveiling marks the beginning of a nine-year novena leading up to the year 2033, commemorating the 2,000- year anniversary of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

Icons have held a vital role in Christian tradition for centuries, serving as windows to the divine. Beyond simple paintings, they are visual prayers inviting believers into deeper spiritual reflection. The process of creating an icon follows precise theological and artistic traditions, from the use of layered pigments to the symbolic gestures and colors chosen to depict sacred figures.

“I had many hours to sit with the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross while painting,” says Zelasko. “This is about contemplation and connection—my hope is that this image provides a source of prayer and reflection for all who encounter it.”

On Ash Wednesday, Archbishop Aquila also released his latest pastoral note, “Standing at the Foot of the Cross with Mary,” encouraging the faithful to enter into a deeper relationship with Christ through prayer and devotion during Lent.
