INTRODUCTION: Daughters of the Holy Spirit are Catholic female religious who choose to live together in the Spirit of Pentecost to serve and care for the poor, the underprivileged, and the vulnerable. We take three vows: chastity, poverty, and obedience.
CHARISM: AS A CONGREGATION WE RECEIVE THE GIFT TO LIVE TOGETHER IN THE SPIRIT OF PENTECOST AND TO PARTICIPATE WITH OTHERS IN HIS MISSION OF LOVE IN THE WORLD.
VISION: “…I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was sick, and you visited me.” – Matthew 25: 34-36
MISSION: To recognize the person of Jesus Christ in the poor, the underprivileged and the vulnerable, and have a great respect and love for them.
APOSTOLATE:
- Provision of basic needs to the abandoned children and children with special needs (physical and mental handicap) and the abandoned aged and families in destitute (food, clothing, shelter)
- Provision of health care services in rural areas – preventive care, home care, primary health care services, a mobile clinic, health outreach programs
- Improving women’s dignity and economic standard of living in families through women empowerment, most especially the widow (skilled acquisition, literacy education)
- Provision of primary and basic education for the underprivileged and the poor in rural areas, especially children, including children with special needs, teenagers included
- Daughters of the Holy Spirit are inserted among the people, including in the villages, to promote and collaborate with ordinary people towards the growth and development of rural areas (provision of portable drinking water)
- Daughters of the Holy Spirit support the young who are searching for meaning in their lives through organizing youth programs, psychospiritual counselling, and giving scholarships for secondary education
- Actively involved in the propagation of Catholic faith through:
- Teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
- Involvement with the children through the Holy Childhood Association
- Pastoral workers in the parishes
PURPOSE FOR MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE PROGRAM FUNDS:
- Building of classrooms for children to provide basic education in Villages
- Provision of portable drinking water in rural areas
- Building of health centers in the villages
STATISTICS: There are more than 90 Daughters of the Holy Spirit Nigerian professed sisters and we have more than thirty young women undergoing formation (Postulants and novices). At the moment, we are in seven dioceses, in rural areas where the sisters face the same realities and destiny with the underprivileged and the poor.
